IHG Hotels & Resorts is to open its first InterContinental property in Manchester when it takes over an existing hotel in one of the UK city’s landmark buildings.
IHG, which currently has four InterContinental-branded hotels in the UK and Ireland, is opening InterContinental Manchester – Deansgate in the 47-storey Beetham Tower in central Manchester.
The 264-room hotel, which is owned by Blue Manchester Hotel Limited, will be fully rebranded and renovated by 2027 and will stay open throughout this process. The property is currently the Hilton Manchester Deansgate.
Following refurbishment, the property, which is based across 22 floors, will feature a ground floor “podium” bar and restaurant, indoor pool, fitness centre and a range of 18 meeting spaces.
Willemijn Geels, vice president, development, Europe at IHG Hotels & Resorts, said the signing “marks a significant milestone in our UK and Ireland development strategy”.
“The landmark signing further strengthens IHG’s luxury and lifestyle portfolio in the UK and perfectly complements our Kimpton Clocktower property — reinforcing our position as the leading luxury hospitality player in Manchester,” added Geels.
A Blue Manchester Hotel spokesperson said the move represented “an exciting new chapter for this iconic Manchester hotel”.
“The transformation will be supported by significant investment to enhance the guest experience and elevate the hotel to a new standard of luxury,” they added. “We are confident this next phase will further strengthen the hotel’s reputation as one of the city’s premier destinations.”
IHG already has two InterContinental properties in London – one in Park Lane and the other close to The O2 arena in Greenwich. There are also hotels in Edinburgh and Dublin.
