BOEING is pressing ahead with impressive ”Connexion” in flight broad Internet service with Lufthansa lined up as the first carrier to put the system into operational service, expected in April. After conducting similar low-key tests last spring surprisingly British Airways is not introducing a similar system, believing that an integrated, so far unannounced IFE (in flight entertainment) package is the way forward. In the meantime Boeing has also signed up ANA, China Airlines, Japan Airlines, SAS and Singapore Airlines (who had previously announced a deal with rival Tensing) and is installing the system not only on aircraft of its own design, but that of Airbus. Boeing”s 737 demonstrator has been in the UK showing to both airlines and the media the ability to surf the net whilst at 35,000 ft, send and receive emails and at the same take digital photographs on board and transmit to a land station proving the ability to send large attachments).
