Lufthansa is to relaunch flights between Frankfurt and Nagoya in Japan next summer, as part of an expansion in capacity to Japan.
The German carrier has not operated the Frankfurt-Nagoya route since March 2020 when the service was suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Lufthansa plans to restart the seasonal route from 29 March 2027, with three flights per week.
Nagoya in the Aichi Prefecture is the gateway to Japan’s automotive industry as well as other manufacturing sectors.
Lufthansa will also upgrade its Frankfurt-Tokyo Narita route to a daily service from 28 March by adding an extra weekly flight. The airline already flies daily from both Munich and Frankfurt to Tokyo Haneda Airport.
The airline will use Boeing 787-9 aircraft, featuring its Allegris cabins, on these new flights to Japan. These three-class aircraft feature 28 seats in business class, 28 seats in premium economy and 231 economy seats.
Sister carrier Swiss will also upgrade its route between Zurich and Tokyo Narita from six weekly flights to a daily service for summer 2027.
Dieter Vranckx, chief commercial officer of Lufthansa Group, described Japan as a “key market” for the company.
“These investments provide our customers with more travel options and support the continued diversification of our intercontinental network,” said Vranckx in a statement.
The group’s airlines – Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines and ITA Airways – plan to offer up to 50 flights per week to Japan in their summer 2027 schedules.
