The World Heath Organisation’s Emergency Committee on coronavirus has tweaked recommendations to governments following a meeting earlier this week.
The challenges of harmonising national and global response in relation to international travel was discussed among other items on the agenda.
The committee modified its recommendation on international traffic bans saying to lift or ease them. It said: “they do not provide added value and continue to contribute to the economic and social stresses experienced by States Parties.”
The recommendation went on to say that travel measures should be “based on risk assessments and avoid placing the financial burden on international travellers.”
The committee extended a separate recommendation around proof of vaccination against the virus. It advised against requiring proof of vaccination for international travel “as the only pathway or condition permitting international travel” because of inequitable distribution of the vaccines worlwide.
