The U.S. and Turkey both have suspended visas for travel
between the two countries. On Sunday, the U.S. Embassy in Ankara suspended all
non-immigrant visa services, citing "recent events [that] have forced the
United States government to reassess the commitment of the government of Turkey
to the security of U.S. mission facilities and personnel." In response,
the government of Turkey suspended all visa services to U.S. citizens, including
online visas and physical "sticker" visas at border points.
The suspensions come a few days after Turkey arrested a U.S.
consulate employee in Istanbul under suspicion of links to a failed coup in the
nation last year, according to Al Jazeera.
Turkish
Airlines is offering refunds and waiving change fees for Turkish passengers
flying to the U.S. and American passengers flying to Istanbul through Oct. 31.
The visa suspension does not affect Americans who are connecting through
Istanbul to destinations outside Turkey, according to the carrier.
