British Airways has this week announced a further expansion at London City Airport which sees the airline base four more Embraer E190 aircraft at the airport during 2019, bringing the total fleet number to 26 aircraft.
The airline also announced the launch of a year-round service to Rome from 11 November. The airline is also adding a fifth daily service to Zurich.
Luke Hayhoe, general manager commercial and customer, said: "It is very positive to continue the year-on year-expansion at London City Airport. We added 13 per cent more capacity in 2018 and will add nearly 20 per cent in 2019. The new route to Rome will increase the number of British Airways' destinations from London City Airport to 33."
London City Airport has become hugely popular with business travellers, thanks to its proximity to the City and Docklands, since it opened for service in 1987.
Our chart this week shows the increase in passenger numbers at the airport over the past 20 years. In that period the airport was connected to the London transport network with the opening of a DLR station in 2005 and the expansion of the apron in 2008.

In 2016, the airport was given the go-ahead for a £344 million expansion which would see aircraft movements increase from 70,000 to 111,000. Passenger numbers are expected to hit 6 million by 2023.
The airport now had connections to more than 40 airports. When it opened, flights served just Plymouth, Paris, Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
BA is expected to announce more routes from the airport shortly.
