Thai Airways plans to grow its fleet from 85 to 105 planes over the next five years.
The airline has signed deals for 37 new planes, some of which will be used to replace old aircraft.
Piyasvasti Amranand, Thai’s president, said that by 2017 the average age of the airline’s fleet would be 8.5 years.
Thai’s current fleet is on average 11.7 years old – “some are 20 years old and have to be retired,” said Amranand, “whilst others are pretty young”.
The airline also plans to revitalise its product with new seats in business class, and is considering something akin to Air New Zealand’s Sky Couch in economy.
Until Thai takes delivery of the new planes, Amranand said expansion in the number of destinations the airline serves is unlikely.
