Airline Swiss is introducing free internet use for chat services such as WhatsApp on its long-haul flights.
The move takes effect from Wednesday (2 August) onwards and will apply across cabin classes on all Swiss’ long-haul services.
The Lufthansa-owned airline said that there would be no data limit on passengers using chat services and access will be offered to “all the most popular chat and messenger services”, including WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Telegram.
Although those wishing to browse the internet and use email or social media have to choose from two optional payment packages, which start from CHF25 (€26). There is no charge for those travelling in first class and HON Circle Members who receive unlimited internet access throughout their flight.
Swiss’ chief commercial officer Tamur Goudarzi Pour called the move a “a big step forward” in onboard connectivity for passengers.
“With our new unlimited free chat facility in all our travel classes, our guests can keep in contact with their families, friends and business partners throughout their flight,” he said.
