Around 10 per cent of flights from Heathrow have been cancelled today (October 21) due to high winds as the UK is buffeted by the remnants of Hurricane Gonzalo.
Airlines are cancelling some short-haul services to allow more time between flights at the UK’s hub airport as winds are predicted to reach up to 75 miles per hour.
British Airways, the biggest operator at Heathrow, said it had agreed with a request from the airport and NATS (National Air Traffic Services) to reduce its schedule for today for “safety reasons”.
“We are sorry that a number of short-haul and domestic flights have been cancelled and others may experience delays as a result of the poor weather,” said the airline.
“We are working as hard as we can to mitigate any disruption. Other airports have also reduced the number of aircraft they are able to handle."
Gatwick said in a statement: "We don’t anticipate any disruption due to weather."
