Rail operator Greater Anglia plans to increase the capacity of its Stansted Express service by adding 29,000 more seats per week this summer.
The move will see the number of carriages being increased from eight to 12 on “many” of Stansted Express’ services.
Eleni Jordan, head of sales, said, “As demand continues to grow we are delighted to be able to offer extra seats on our services this summer.”
Earlier this year, Stansted Express launched new lower fares starting at £7 per person each way when booked in advance or when four people make a return journey together.
The additional Stansted Express capacity is part of a wider boost in seats on Greater Anglia services, with over 100,000 extra seats per week being added from the start of the summer timetable.
The operator is also hiring 22 additional trains for use on other services in the East Anglia region. This will allow Greater Anglia to add extra carriages to some existing services at peak times as well as some additional trains.
Andy Camp, Greater Anglia's commercial director, added: "These seats will mostly be available during the peak travelling periods to ensure a more comfortable journey for the one million passengers we serve every week."
New stops will also be added at the new Cambridge North station, which gives access to the Cambridge Science Park.
