Ryanair is planning to trial a new inflight entertainment service and it may even be offered to passengers for free.
The no-frills airline’s chief technology officer John Hurley told The Telegraph that it would trial the new service on some routes from Dublin this summer.
Travellers will be able to use their tablets and smartphones to connect to the aircraft’s internal wifi system, and then watch a series of pre-recorded films and TV shows.
Hurley added that there will “probably” be no extra charge for this service with the initiative being paid for by advertising shown on the entertainment system.
“It's aimed at passengers on flights of more than two or three hours,” said Hurley.
“They'll watch a couple of adverts and will then have access to a selection of pre-recorded TV shows and films which will be streamed through internal wifi.”
Ryanair is also planning to trial a separate onboard wifi service later this year, which will be installed on key business routes between major European cities.
Pricing details have not been announced but it could be offered to business travellers as part of the airline’s new ‘Business Plus’ fares, which were launched in August 2014.
