A £40/€40 boarding pass fee charged by Ryanair has been deemed legal by a Spanish court.
The boarding card reissue penalty, for passengers who don’t print their boarding pass before arriving at the airport, was subject to a legal challenge earlier this year.
In an initial ruling, a Spanish judge found the fee to be illegal, but this decision has been overruled by the Barcelona Appeal Court.
The penalty complies with Spanish and EU law, the appeal courts found in the final ruling.
According to Ryanair’s Daniel de Carvalho, less than 1% of passengers pay the penalty.
“We urge all Ryanair passengers to ensure that they check in online prior to arriving at their departure airport, in which case no boarding card reissue penalties will arise.”
“By checking in online passengers can also avoid check-in queues and minimise their dwell times at the airport.”
