The UK government has advised travellers against all but essential travel to Nepal following Saturday’s earthquake which has killed more than 3,700 people.
The Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) said aftershocks are continuing and a smaller earthquake occurred yesterday around 13:00. There are also reports of avalanches in the Macchaputre and Everest regions.
In a statement the FCO said: “If you are in a safe place, you should stay where you are until it is safe to leave. You should follow any advice provided by the local authorities. If you can leave Nepal safely then we advise that you should do so.”
Foreign secretary Philip Hammond said Embassy support was being offered to any British travellers in the area. He said staff had already helped around 200 British nationals.
ABTA published a statement this morning advising any travellers currently in Nepal should monitor local news and media reports and to follow any advice and instructions issued by the authorities and by the Foreign Office.
