The opening of the Mexico City-London route gives Mexicana passengers access to one of the world's major business and tourism destinations
The new route is expected to strengthen cultural and business ties between Mexico, the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe.
Mexicana, Mexico's leading international carrier, today inaugurated its first transatlantic flight on the Mexico City-London route. The new service to London's Gatwick airport forms part of the company's expansion and growth plans, consolidating its presence on the European market.
In a gesture of hospitality, the Mexican Ambassador to the United Kingdom Juan José Bremer organised a cocktail party at his residence in honour of the passengers flying on Mexicana's inaugural service to London. Among the distinguished guests were ambassador of the United Kingdom in Mexico, Giles Paxman, Ambassador María de Lourdes Aranda Bezaury, Undersecretary Foreign Relations to Mexico's Federal Government, members of Mexicana's board of directors, company management and representatives of London's business and tourism sectors.
Two flights a week will initially be available on the new route, departing from Mexico City on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. and arriving at London's Gatwick airport at 7:25 a.m. the following day. Return flights will leave London at 10:30 a.m. on Thursdays and Sundays and arrive in Mexico at 5:30 p.m. the following day.
As of February 17, two additional flights will be available, departing from Mexico City on Tuesdays and Fridays and returning on Wednesdays and Saturdays at the aforementioned times. These flights will be operated with B767-200 aircraft that can seat up to 156 passengers.
The new Mexico City-London route is an excellent alternative for both business and leisure passengers seeking quality services and a unique travel experience. According to Mexicana CEO Manuel Borja, "Here at Mexicana, we firmly believe that adversity can be overcome only with hard work and perseverance. In these times of economic turbulence, we have opted to offset adverse industry conditions by offering quality services. We understand that it's not just a question of getting our passengers from A to B, but of getting them there as comfortably and efficiently as possible, and the best example of this new philosophy is our long-haul routes."
"The decision to fly to London reaffirms our commitment to our passengers and illustrates how Mexicana is taking steps to address the challenges posed by the airline industry. It also positions us as an innovative international airline, concerned about the development and consolidation of the commercial aviation industry," added Borja.
Elite Class passengers will be treated to world-class services that include exclusive in-flight meals created by Executive Chef Enrique Olvera Mexicana, an icon of Mexican cuisine, accompanied with a selection of fine wines handpicked by Executive Sommelier Sandra Fernández from Tierra de Vinos. And to ensure maximum comfort, this class has been fitted out with 160° reclining Minipod XM bed seats, complete with fully adjustable leather head and armrests, a central cocktail table, a folding food service table and a shoe compartment, plus legroom of 165 cm between rows.
Mexicana aims to cater to the needs of passengers in both the business and leisure segments with these new flights. The number of tourists traveling between Mexico and London is also expected to increase as a result, with both Terminal 1 of the Mexico City International Airport and Gatwick -Mexicana's gateway to Europe- offering convenient connections.
