Lufthansa has cancelled dozens of long-haul flights on Saturday (March 21) as the airline’s pilots plan a fourth consecutive day of strikes.
The industrial action by the Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) pilots union began on Wednesday and
has continued on Friday which has forced Lufthansa to cancel around 800 short and medium-haul services. Although 90 of these flights were cancelled due to a separate strike by Italian air traffic controllers.
Lufthansa said that Saturday’s 24-hour strike would affect long-haul services but not short-haul flights.
Members of the VC union have walked out 14 times in the last 12 months including Friday’s stoppage, which has already cost Lufthansa an estimated €200 million in profit in 2014.
Pilots are striking over changes the airline wants to make to their early retirement benefits.
