Lufthansa has been forced to cancel just under one-third of its flights on Monday (November 9) due to the ongoing strike by cabin crew.
The industrial action, which started on Friday and is scheduled to last until the end of this week (November 13), has caused Lufthansa to cancel 929 flights, including most long-haul services on Monday, from a normal schedule of 3,000 flights. The cancellations are expected to affect around 113,000 passengers.
The UFO cabin crew union is taking strike action at Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Munich airports on Monday in a dispute over employee retirement and pension benefits.
Lufthansa’s subsidiaries including Lufthansa City Line, Germanwings, Eurowings, Austrian Airlines, Swiss and Brussels Airlines are not affected by the strike and will operate normal schedules.
“Lufthansa will do its utmost to keep the effects of a strike to a minimum and to inform passengers as soon as possible,” said the airline in a statement.
Lufthansa added that “nearly all” continental and intercontinental flights had been cancelled on Monday. Although a “few” services will operate from Munich and Frankfurt to Heathrow and Dublin, as well as long-haul services to New Delhi, Hong Kong and Tokyo.
