Lufthansa has confirmed it will cancel nearly 900 of its 3,000 scheduled flights tomorrow, due to another pilots strike.
The German carrier advised passengers that they can rebook their flights free of charge in case of cancellation and switch to Deutsche Bahn rail for shorter journeys.
The disruption is expected to hit around 100,000 travellers. 51 of the 876 cancelled flights are intercontinental.
The action will affect long and short-haul services from 00:00 – 23:59 November 23.
The announcement concerns Lufthansa flights only, with those operated by CityLine, Germanwings, Eurowings, Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, SWISS and Brussels Airlines operating as normal.
Labour union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), which represents the majority of the airline's pilots, said the pay offer from the airline of 2.5 per cent is not “adequate” after seeing the basic salary for executive board members rise 30 per cent in recent years and an “even greater increase” for the supervisory board. The union is calling for a 3.7 per cent pay rise for 5,400 pilots dating back to 2012.
“The VC regrets the impact on the passengers, cabin crew and ground staff concerned,” it said in a statement.
Lufthansa said it offered the union a mediation to solve the collective labour agreement but claims this was rejected.
“Unfortunately, this strike brings many inconveniences for our customers, for which Lufthansa is apologising in advance,” Lufthansa said in a statement.
Earlier this year, airline lobby group A4E called for 21 days notice to strike to help minimise the impact action has on businesses and consumers.
