An increase in passenger numbers to emerging markets such as Mexico, Turkey and the Middle East helped Heathrow record its best ever start to the year.
The west-London hub saw 5.5 million passengers pass through last month, although this was only up 1 per cent on the previous year.
Heathrow’s monthly traffic report showed strong year-on-year passenger growth from countries such as Mexico (21%), China (16%), Turkey (5.3%) and the Middle East (4%).
The airport said it expects this trend to continue in 2016 as Garuda Indonesia prepares to move its UK operations from Gatwick to Heathrow in March.
Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye said: "With record passenger numbers and strong cargo volumes - it's been a great start to 2016 for the nation's largest port, Heathrow.
“With expansion, we'll open up 40 new trading links which will carry more British exports to the fastest growing markets in the world.”
