A week-long awareness campaign is set to take place next June, to encourage businesses to think green when it comes to travel.
Intended to highlight the business benefits and potential cost savings of green-mindedness in tourism, the week will see an online campaign take place alongside events held regionally throughout the UK where businesses can get specialist advice.
Launched by the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) today (October 19), Green Tourism Week will take place between June 6 and 10, 2011.
It's also a chance for businesses to show what they're doing, said Andrea Nicholas, managing director of GTBS.
"We wanted an opportunity to highlight some of the exemplary practices undertaken by GTBS members and the cost savings they have made," she said.
"Holding a focused Green Week with an awards ceremony for some of our greenest members will be a great platform to get out the message that being green can benefit your bottom-line."
A buyer-based "green inspectors" programme will also be launched, with an awards ceremony recognising best practice.
Visit England will be supporting the campaign, alongside Beacon Purchasing.
Jason Freezer from VisitEngland, ‘Sustainability is fast becoming an essential part of competitive positioning in the tourism industry... green is increasingly not just a ‘nice to have' but rather an essential strategic driver for business growth.'
