Gatwick Airport has outlined its 10-year green plan, including a bid to cut its carbon emissions by 50% by 2020, compared to 2009 levels.
Over the next 10 years, the airport also plans to reduce its energy consumption by 20% (compared to 2009 levels) and its water consumption by 20% (compared to this year).
By 2020 Gatwick has also pledged to stop sending waste to landfill, install an electric car recharge network for passnegers and staff, and generate power via renewable souces.
Stewart Wingate, Gatwick airport's CEO, said: "As new owners we've grasped teh opportunity to introduce new, challenging targets and inititatives to improve our environmental credentials."
The airport achieved the Carbon Trust Standard at the beginning of August.
Organisations are awarded the Carbon Trust Standard for measuring, managing and reducing their carbon emissions.
Gatwick will hold the Standard for two years, and to maintain the certification it must reapply and demonstrate it has continued to make year on year reductions in its carbon emissions.
