Flybe’s new Heathrow-Scotland routes helped push the airport’s domestic traffic up 4.4 per cent last month.
In March, the regional airline started offering more than 40 flights a week from Aberdeen and Edinburgh to Heathrow. It follows the reduction in domestic passenger charges by a third.
Overall passenger numbers were up around 5 per cent in March with a record 6.16 million passengers travelling through the UK’s hub.
Figures were also helped by strong growth to East Asia (+8%), Latin America (+7%) and the Middle East (+6%).
Heathrow also saw global British trade soar in March, with volumes rising almost 13 per cent – the largest monthly growth in five years.
Heathrow CEO John-Holland-Kaye said the figures put Britain in a strong position as Brexit negotiations start.
“Our expansion plans will give Britain the tools to do even better,” said Holland-Kaye. “We’ll double our domestic connections and add up to 40 new long-haul trading links, making the UK the best connected country on earth. It’s a huge prize that only Heathrow delivers and we’re getting on with securing it for Britain.”
