BA cabin crew members of the Unite union are to be balloted again after a “legal blitz” by the airline highlighted alleged flaws in the previous one.
The last ballot of 10,220 saw 75 per cent turn out to vote, with 78.5 per cent of these voting in favour of further strikes.
However, Unite’s general secretary Len McCluskey said it could not call industrial action based on this ballot following a “legal blitz” by BA which alleged that proceedings had been unlawful, under the scrutinee of the Electoral Reform Society (ERS).
The ERS issued a qualification in its report on the ballot, according to Unite, meaning that any resulting industrial action could be viewed as illegal.
“Unite therefore cannot call industrial action based on this ballot, since such a move would expose our members to sanctions,” McCluskey said.
A new ballot is expected to be announced “within the next ten days or so”, postponing a decision on strikes that threatened travel plans over the half term and Easter holidays.
