Alitalia will start codesharing on Jet Airways’ flights between Milan Malpensa and Delhi from December 5, when the Indian airline starts flying the route.
The two Skyteam member airlines have signed an agreement, subject to government approval, for Alitalia to place its AZ code on Jet’s flights to the Indian capital.
Jet Airways will also place its code (9W) on a number of services operated by Alitalia.
The codeshare means Alitalia passengers from Milan will be able to fly direct to Delhi.
Currently, Qatar is the only other airline to offer flights to Delhi from Milan (Malpensa), but these connect via Doha.
Roberto Colaninno, Alitalia’s chairman, said the agreement was in line with Alitalia’s growth strategy.
He said: “[It] follows the key agreements that Alitalia already signed with Aeroflot, Etihad and Vietnam Airlines.”
Naresh Goyal, Jet Airways’ chairman, said: “India and Italy share strong ties, ranging across leisure and business tourism and commercial trade.”
