Air New Zealand is set to launch its economy-class Skynest full-length sleeping pods on its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft later this year.
The airline said that the Skynest pods, which were first announced in 2022, would be available on flights between Auckland and New York JFK airports from November 2026. Flights on the Auckland-New York route take between 16 and 18 hours.
The pods, located between Premium Economy and Economy cabins, will be available for passengers in four-hour sessions and are priced from $495 per person. Tickets for the pods will go on sale from May 18.
Air New Zealand’s CEO Nikhil Ravishankar said the Skynest innovation was part of the carrier’s efforts to “improve the travel experience” on long-haul flights to the remote South Pacific destination.
“Skynest is designed to help make that easier. It reflects the practical innovation New Zealand is known for and shows how thoughtful design can improve the travel experience,” added Ravishankar.
“By giving more people the chance to properly rest on ultra long-haul flights, it helps make travel to and from New Zealand more manageable."
The new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner will also offer upgraded premium features, including new Business Premier Luxe seats with a fully closing door and ottoman for guests, while new Premium Economy seats will feature a fixed outer shell.
Premium Economy and Economy passengers will also have access to a self-service snack area.
