Whitbread’s Premier Inn hotel brand has reported increased occupancy rates as the budget chain extends its reach.
In a trading update before it enters closed period, Whitbread said its hotels had achieved an occupancy rate of 76.3% in the 50 weeks to February 17, a rise of 6.1 percentage points on the full year 2009. Growth in revenue per available room, like for like, was 8.5%.
During the year, another 22 properties were added totalling 2,138 rooms. Premier Inn now operates 228 hotels in the UK and five abroad with more than 22,000 rooms. It is on an aggressive expansion phase, targeting the budget-conscious business traveller and the bed and breakfast sector.
“We remain on target to have 55,000 rooms in the UK by the end of 2013/14,” said a spokesman.
Whitbread, which also operates Costa Coffee and a restaurant business that includes the Beefeater and Brewers Fayre chains, will report its full year results on April 28.
Whitbread chief executive Andy Harrison said: “Whitbread continues to perform well, with total sales in the last 11 weeks up 12.4%.”
