DONCASTER ROVERS on Friday night became probably the first ever British soccer club to fly in an aircraft whose call sign is the club”s name. League One club Doncaster played non-league Exeter City in the FA Cup. G-DRFC, a French built 46-seat ATR 42 turboprop aircraft, is normally operated on bmi”s new four times daily Leeds Bradford to London City service. The aircraft is owned by Coventry Airport based Air Atlantique run by Mike Collett, a former chairman of Doncaster (and still a board member). The aircraft is unusual in that it is painted to promote bmi”s new services to Las Vegas and the Caribbean and is on contract to the airline. Unfortunately Doncaster lost and the Champagne for the return journey had to be put away for another day. But they are still in the record books.
