QUEEN MARY 2 is in a perverse way likely to take over where Concorde left off as a flagship for British Airways. BA is strongly marketing the successful QE2 package of one way across the Atlantic by air and the return by sea. At a lead-in price of just ”999 it is bound to be a success. And you cannot be anything but amazed with a ship that is three times the size of Titanic and nearly twice the tonnage of its distinguished 1936 predecessor. But don”t be alarmed by the size. There is space a plenty and no crowding. Queen Mary 2 is a true deep-sea ocean liner capable of 30 knots and qualified to operate (in theory if not in practice) across the Atlantic all year round. Somehow the designers have styled the public areas in such a way that you don”t feel that you are in such a huge vessel. Besides its transatlantic crossings QM2 will operate three European cruises this summer. It has also been chartered as a floating hotel during the Athens Olympics. During the winter an extensive Caribbean programme is planned.
