P&O FERRIES is investing ”50m to transform its freight ships European Pathway and European Highway into luxurious multi-purpose ferries for service between Dover and Calais this summer. When previously in service between Dover and Zeebrugge the 30,000 ton ships (as big as many a cruise liner) were configured to carry commercial freight only, with on-board facilities for just 200 passengers. By extending the two passenger decks to run some 75% of the length of the ships, space is being created for new restaurants, galleys, bars, shops, lounges and entertainment areas to cater for up to for 2,000 passengers, with the crossing taking as little as 75 minutes. Conversion of the European Pathway is due for completion by the end of April when the ship will replace the multi-purpose ferry Pride of Canterbury, taking its predecessor”s name. The European Highway will become the Pride of Kent when it replaces its namesake at the end of May.
