MALDIVES, which was among the countries most severely affected by the tsunami, is now working towards recovery. The initial assessment indicates that, out of the 87 resort islands in the Maldives, 64 resorts are in operation; 19 have had to be closed due to the damage and four resorts were under construction before the incident. Out of 19 resorts that are not serviceable six will take at least six months to open. The remaining 13 are expected to be operational within a shorter time span. The new Shangri-La under construction at Gan suffered minimum disruption and is expected to open as planned in early 2006.
