COMPANY BARCLAYCARD says that the Internet is continuing to challenge traditional travel booking methods. According to their research, published last week, in the last 12 months, booking flights and trains online has increased by eight per cent: 66% of business travellers booked flights online and 45% booked train tickets in this way. This is an increase of nearly 50% since 2000, when just 17% of business travellers booked travel online. Ticket-less travel has also grown massively. In 1999, only 19% of business travellers had flown without a ticket, using a credit card as proof of purchase. Today, 67% of cardholders have flown ticket-less, as the airlines strive to grow usage and so manage their costs. Amongst the many other findings from the Travel in Business Survey 2003/4 was that business travellers who work in the public sector book train tickets online more than those in any other sector (68% make train bookings on-line compared to a national average of 45%).
