The UK’s travel industry has paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II who passed away at Balmoral in Scotland yesterday (8 September).
A state funeral for the country’s longest-reigning monarch, who died aged 96, is expected to be held within ten days at Westminster Abbey in London.
Airlines, airports and travel associations from across the country issued tributes to the Queen, while planned rail strikes due to take place on September 15 and 17 have been called off.
“We are deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Her Majesty the Queen,” said the UK’s flag-carrier British Airways in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the entire British Royal Family and the nation, as we grieve her immeasurable loss.”
The airline went on to say it was “deeply honoured and proud to have flown Her Majesty on a number of occasions, moments which we will always cherish”.
British Airways’ statement continued: “Her Majesty has for so long shown immense resilience and encouraged us to stand together to face difficult times, so now we proudly stand together with the United Kingdom, to thank her for her service and bid her a final farewell.”
Virgin Atlantic described the Queen as “an extraordinary figurehead, flying the flag for the United Kingdom around the world during a reign like no other”.
A statement from Heathrow Airport, whose Terminal 2 is also known as The Queen’s Terminal, said it was “saddened to hear that Her Majesty the Queen has passed away” and offered its condolences to the Royal Family.
UK-based InterContinental Hotels said it was “grateful for the extraordinary service she gave to the UK and Commonwealth over so many years”, while the Civil Aviation Authority “expressed its sincere condolences to the whole of the Royal Family”.
Julia Simpson, president and CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council, said: “The Queen has been the most incredible force for good. She won the hearts and respect of people and nations around the world.
“Our sincere condolences to the Royal Family and our heartfelt tribute to Her Majesty the Queen for a lifetime of devotion and dedicated service.”
