The Foreign & Commonwealth Office has maintained the lifting of advice against travel to Tokyo despite today’s earthquake, the second in less than a month.
North Eastern Japan was once again the location of the quake, which had a magnitude of 7.1. However, unlike last month’s, which brought widespread devastation, the resultant tsunami was predicted to be only a metre high.
The Foreign & Commonwealth Office is still advising against all but essential travel to areas north east of Tokyo that were most affected by the previous earthquake and tsunami.
The British government is monitoring the situation concerning the Fukushima nuclear reactor that was damaged by the disaster. It said: “Although thesituation at Fukushima will remain of concern for some time, the risks are gradually declining as the reactors cool and as facilities to stabilise them are established.”
It urged British nationals to remain outside an 80km radius of the plant, which is well away from the airport and general metropolitan area.
