The latest ash cloud incident is proving difficult to predict, according to experts and authorities in the UK and abroad.
A number of flights to and from Scotland were cancelled this morning, with fears the ash cloud will spread further south into English and continental European airspace and cause more cancellations and delays.
News about the ash cloud from Iceland’s Grimsvotn volcano is currently the most read story on the BBC and one of the biggest trending topics on Twitter in the UK.
At 8am, the Meteorological Office said that “the ash had already reached northern Scotland and would spread to Wales, northern England and Northern Ireland by midday and across much of the UK by the end of the day.
But forecasters said changing wind patterns make it hard to predict its exact path and concentrations would vary between regions.
Flights to Scotland operated by BA, KLM, easyjet, Loganair and Eastern Airways have already been affected.
It is understood that the blanket closure of UK airspace, as happened last year, is unlikely to happen. New measures are in place, which see the airlines and authorities working closely together to minimise disruption to travellers.
