Copenhagen Airport (CPH), the busiest airport in the Nordics ahead of both Oslo and Stockholm's Arlanda, last week announced its busiest ever month in its 90-year history, with more than 2.7 million passengers travelling through the airport in July, up 5.1% on the same month last year.
The airport is getting busier more often too. In July, there were more than 20 days when more than 90,000 people passed through the airport, compared with six in 2014.
The airport has enjoyed healthy growth in the past four years and is well on track to reach its target of 40 million passengers a year within 20 years. In 2014, the airport added six new destinations, bringing the number served from the airport to 157, of which 27 are outside Europe.
The airport says that a quarter of the traffic at CPH is now on low-cost carriers, up slightly on 2013.
It is good to delve under the headline figures to see what else is happening. Despite the record figures, Danish domestic traffic fell by 6% on 2014 while European traffic grew by 58% and intercontinental traffic by 3.4%. Part of the growth can be explained by poor weather in Denmark, which has seen more people travel overseas for holidays.
We can also look at the most popular destinations from the airport, which are shown in the chart below.

The top 10 have remained almost the same from year to year but what is striking is the huge growth in traffic to London, up by more than 15% in a year.
One of the reasons for the increase is that Ryanair has started operating between Copenhagen and London with two daily flights — a move that will help its pretensions to be business airline. The route is well served and there are now up to 25 services a day from a range of airlines to Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton.
