Heathrow has cancelled 10 per cent of its flights today (January 21) due to the continued bad weather in the south-east.
The airport made the decision last night in an attempt to “minimise the expected disruption caused by low visibility”.
The decision has meant the cancellation of around 130 flights. Heathrow added that services scheduled after 16.00 were most likely to be affected. The airport had to cancel around 250 flights on Sunday due to persistent snow in the area.
“Details of which flights will be cancelled will be announced by airlines when they have finalised their schedules,” said Heathrow in a statement. “It is possible that weather conditions at other European airports will increase the number of cancellations.”
Heathrow also moved to justify its decision to cancel flights due to its lack of “spare runway capacity”.
“When there is low visibility, more space has to be left between aircraft,” added the airport. “Many airports have plenty of spare runway capacity so aircraft can be spaced out more during low visibility without causing delays and cancellations.
“Because Heathrow operates at almost full capacity, there is simply no room to reschedule the delayed flights.”
