If you live in Manchester don”t be alarmed to see a close formation of an Avro Lancaster bomber and a Thomas Cook Airbus flying low level around lunchtime on Tuesday. Special permission has been given for the pair to fly at 1000 feet over the (now Crown Plaza) Midland Hotel where Henry Royce met Charles Rolls on 4 May 1904 and signed an agreement to form the Rolls-Royce company. The event is being organised by Rolls-Royce, the engine people, who are marking the centenary with a number of special events throughout the UK. The aerial salute flypast is timed for 1245. But do not expect the greatest of all Rolls-Royce powered aircraft in the display, as shown in our picture of the RAF Memorial Flight. In 2004 Spitfires are not allowed to fly low level over city centres.
