A stronger set of rules for airlines operating in the US have come into force.
As of today (August 23), passengers are entitled to greater compensation if they are bumped off flights.
Travellers will receive double the price of their ticket up to $650 if their flight is delayed by a few hours.
Previously, passengers were entitled to compensation equal to the value of their ticket, up to $400.
For longer delays airlines will be forced to pay up to four times the value of a ticket, up to $1,300. Previously this compensation was capped at $800.
Other rules introduced today include the requirement for airlines to prominently disclose all ancillary fees on their websites, including baggage and cancellation fees.
