TRANSAERO, the privately-owned Russian carrier, is to transfer its Heathrow ” Moscow (Domodedovo) service to Gatwick from next week. Operating initially on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, the 3 hour 50 minute flight uses a two class Boeing 737-700 aircraft. Domodedovo, said to be Moscow”s most modern airport, has an integrated rail link to the centre of the city. The airport has traditionally concentrated on services to the Caucasus, the Urals, Central Asia, Siberia and the Far East. The airline is particularly looking to pick up connecting business traffic over DME. Typically from the very big oil development in Sakhalin Island, the airline operates a B767 on a schedule service direct to Moscow. Transaero, which was the first privately-owned commercial airline in the history of the Russian Federation, operated its inaugural flight between Moscow and Tel Aviv in 1991. It was also the first Russian carrier to use Western-built aircraft, with the introduction of the Boeing 737 in 1993.
