SAS, the loss making flag carrier of Sweden, Norway and Denmark, announced last Wednesday that it was splitting its main Scandinavian Airlines division into three units in what is being seen by some as a desperate effort to ensure the Star Alliance airlines long term survival. SAS also comprises Braathens, Spanair, Wideroe airlines and Blue1. "The board of directors has given management the mandate to establish three different companies as daughter companies of the SAS consortium in each country," said Simon Revold, group spokesman. He said the board had not for the moment formed a fourth unit for long haul intercontinental flights, a move that had been widely anticipated.
