Portugal has reopened its borders to US travellers who test negative for Covid-19.
As of Tuesday, "non-essential" travellers can enter mainland Portugal so long as they can submit a negative Covid-19 taken within 72 hours of travel, or within 24 hours of travel for rapid antigen tests, according to an update from the US Embassy and Consulate in Portugal. The embassy and consulate noted that Portugal remains in a "state of calamity", with some restrictive measures in place related to closing times of restaurants and tourist attractions as well as mask use and social distancing. The new measure for US travellers currently applieduntil 27 June and will be reviewed for renewal at that time, according to the update.
United Airlines on Tuesday said it would begin direct service to Portugal from Newark Liberty International Airport on 1 July.
Passengers from other countries may enter Portugal for essential travel, which includes business travel, but they must present a negative PCR test take 72 hours or less before departure or a approved rapid antigen test, performed up to 24 hours before boarding time. This only applies to countries that offer reciprocal entry to Portuguese travellers.
