Global airline capacity this week is up 3.5 per cent
compared with last week, with nearly 56 million seats on global flight
schedules, according to OAG.
Carriers in Northeast Asia have the highest capacity growth
this week, with 1.1 million seats added compared with last week. Capacity in
Japan alone is up 9 per cent week over week, as Japan Airlines has added about
140,000 seats, largely domestic. Western European carriers added about 400,000
seats week over week, OAG indicated.
Among individual carriers, the largest capacity growths this
week include: EasyJet, up 53 per cent week over week; Air India, up 29 per cent
week over week; and British Airways, up 21 per cent week over week. In all, 634
of 709 carriers that were operating in January have resumed some level of
service, according to OAG.
Overall, however, ten regional markets are still operating
at 40 per cent or less of their pre-Covid-19 capacity levels, particularly
within Africa and Latin America, OAG indicated. The lowest levels of recovery
at this point are in Southern Africa, with only 13 per cent of mid-January's
capacity level currently operating, and Upper South America, with only 12 per cent
currently operating.
