Philip Hammond has been appointed as the secretary of state for transport.
A conservative, he is the elected member of parliament for Runnymede and Weybridge, having beaten his nearest rival in the constituency by more than 16,000 votes.
Weybridge is less than 15 miles from Heathrow. Under the conservative government, plans for expansion of the airport will be scrapped.
Hammond previously held the position of shadow chief secretary to the treasury, since July 2007.
