Luton Airport has this morning revealed how it sees the future of air transport in the south east with its submission to the government review. London Luton counsels extreme caution in the apparent rush to lay new runways - and makes it clear that it does not support either a new runway at Heathrow, a three or four runway Stansted - or indeed a new airport at Cliffe. What Luton proposes is a "4 x 2" option which would ultimately provide two runways at each of the four main London airports, in other words a second runway at Luton, Stansted and finally Gatwick. For Luton itself the plan has several alternatives, with possibly the best a further runway south and parallel to the existing 08/26 with a new terminal area in between. A motorway standard road would access the terminal and link the M1 and A1 (reducing congestion on the M25) and railway access would be supplied to both the north west and north east rail corridors (and Eurostar via St Pancras). The submission runs to 80 pages. http://www.london-luton.co.uk
