Lufthansa Airlines’ new Allegris business class seats on its Boeing 787-9 aircraft are now available for booking following the long-anticipated approval of the US Federal Aviation Administration.
The German carrier on Monday (16 February) said 25 of the total 28 Allegris business class seats can now be booked for travel from 15 April after “important milestones in the certification process were reached in recent weeks”.
The FAA had delayed certification after reportedly seeking an additional review of how the seats are bolted to the cabin floor, even after European regulators had approved the seats on the carrier's Airbus A350 aircraft.
Lufthansa first began offering the Allegris product in May 2024 onboard Airbus A350 aircraft on routes from Munich, as part of the airline’s €2.5 billion overhaul of its long-haul fleet.
The carrier has been operating its new Boeing 787-9 aircraft, fitted with the Allegris cabin, from Frankfurt since October. However, only four out of 28 Allegris seats had been available to bookings, according to Bloomberg. Now, all except three seats (in the second row of the compartment) are bookable.
The Allegris cabin will be available on flights from Frankfurt to Austin, Rio de Janeiro, Bogotá, Cape Town, Shanghai, Hyderabad, and Hong Kong from the start of the summer season, the carrier confirmed. Dreamliner aircraft featuring Allegris will be added to routes from Frankfurt to both New York JFK and Los Angeles in June, followed by flights to Delhi in July.
The Allegris business class cabin offers a variety of seat options – including the business class suite with a personal wardrobe and minibar, the extra space seat, the privacy seat by the window and the extra-long bed of up to 2.2 metres – all of which can be reserved in advance for an additional charge.
Lufthansa Airlines CEO Jens Ritter said: “We are delighted to be able to offer significantly more passengers this top-of-the-range product for bookings from Frankfurt... the approval of the majority of seats in business class on the Boeing 787-9 is an important milestone for Lufthansa.”
The carrier already has eight new Boeing 787-9 jets at its Frankfurt hub, with an additional 21 aircraft scheduled for delivery by the end of 2027.
