Lufthansa has officially relaunched Germanwings as its new low-cost brand.
Germanwings has taken over all of Lufthansa’s short-haul services away from the main hubs of Frankfurt and Munich. This includes major German cities such as Berlin, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Cologne/Bonn. The move was originally announced in December 2012.
Passengers flying on Germanwings are being offered three categories of tickets:
- Best - the top-level fare designed for business travellers
- Smart - offers extra services such as assigned seating in the same section as Best customers, plus snacks, non-alcoholic drinks and a 23 kilogramme luggage allowance
- Basic - a traditional no-frills fare
Lufthansa Group board member Carsten Spohr said: “We combine the strengths of Germanwings with the advantages of Lufthansa.
"I am sure that our passengers – both business and private travellers – will really appreciate the new brand and new products.
“This approach is also the key for Lufthansa to continue to profitably operate internal European routes beyond our hubs. By creating a highly-attractive offer for our clients, we are also improving Lufthansa's cost effectiveness.”
The relaunched Germanwings will be using the tagline “good value but not cheap”.
