Gatwick Airport’s CEO has said the forced sale of Stansted is “welcome news”.
The Competition Commission’s ruling that BAA must sell Stansted and either Edinburgh or Glasgow “underlines the importance of competition between airports”, said Stewart Wingate.
The sale of Gatwick to London City Airport owners Global Infrastructure Partners demonstrates the benefits to passengers as a result of airport being under separate ownership, he said.
“Under separate ownership, Gatwick is delivering real benefits to both airlines and passengers,” said Wingate.
“Greater competition amongst the London airports will see us raise the bar further still to make Gatwick the airport airlines and passengers want to fly from.”
AirAsia X has recently announced plans to switch from Stansted to Gatwick, a move made by Air Berlin earlier this year.
