Boeing said it will deliver its first 787 to launch airline All Nippon Airways by the end of this year.
According to Reuters, James Albaugh, President and Chief Executive of Boeing Commercial Airplanes said: "Testing is going well. If there are no unexpected discoveries, we'll be on track."
The expected delivery date of the new plane has seen a number of delays.
The first flight was postponed six times, and production of the plane was postponed five times in three years, due to a shortage of bolts, faulty design and a two month strike at its factory.
Boeing has received more than 850 orders for the carbon-composite plane.
In other news from Boeing, the manufacturer has begun assembly of its first 747-8.
The third generation B747 is slated to provide improved fuel efficiency, as well as reduced emissions.
"Mechanics took the first step in major assembly for the new airplane by loading its wing panels and spars in the assembly tools. The spar is the internal support structure that runs through the full length of the wing," said a Boeing spokesperson.
It can have 51 more seats, in a three-class configuration, and produces 30% less noise than its predecessor, the 747-400.
Lufthansa will be the first airline to get the new passenger plane, in late 2011, having put in an order for 20.
