The introduction of a carbon price system next summer by the Australian government will mean more expensive flights, Qantas has announced.
The Australian airline has estimated the new levy, due to be introduced on July 1, 2012, will cost the Qantas group between A$110 million and A$115 million in the financial year ending June 30, 2013.
This cost will be passed onto the passenger, Qantas has confirmed in a statement.
“In the context of the significant challenges facing the global aviation industry, the Qantas Group will be unable to absorb the additional costs associated with the carbon price and there will be a full pass-through to customers,” said the airline.
For a domestic flight, the price of a ticket is expected to rise by A$3.50.
“Fare increases will vary depending on sector length and will be communicated transparently to consumers,” added Qantas.
