British Airways will have a monopoly on the London City-Edinburgh route from the end of October unless a competitor steps in to replace Cityjet, which is to drop the service.
Cityjet, which operates four times a day on weekdays, has thrown in the towel against BA, which has double the number of flights and operates more fuel-efficient aircraft. Cityjet admits the route has been loss-making for several years. However, chief executive Christine Ourmières told The Scotsman that the airline’s Edinburgh-Paris route and the Dundee-London City service would continue.
The announcement comes only a year after Ourmieres said the route was “crucial” to the airline after opening a crew base in the Scottish city.
BA is thought unlikely to add more frequencies to the London-Edinburgh service, but a spokeswoman said it “continued to look at opportunities”.
