Some 2,000 senior cabin crew at British Airways (BA) will be given iPads in a scheme to improve onboard customer service.
The roll-out of the tablets across the entire short-haul and long-haul fleet comes after a successful trial involving 100 staff members.
The iPads come equipped with software and apps that enable cabin crew to access information about passengers’ preferences and previous travel.
The idea is that the crew members will be able to offer a more personalized service during a flight.
Information across a number of different areas is stored, including where each customer is seated, who they are travelling with, their Executive Club status, any special meal requests and onward flight connections.
They also cut down on paper waste, as they replace documents listing up to 337 customers given to cabin crew before a flight departs.
Frank van der Post, BA’s MD of brands and customer experience, said “Once the roll-out has been completed, our crew worldwide will be able to offer a premium and more thoughtful onboard service to customers in every cabin.”
Van der Post said BA hopes to further develop the ways the iPads can be used, starting with the uploading of city guides so cabin crew can offer advice en route to a destination.
“The possibilities for future development of the iPad are endless, and this is only the beginning,” he said.
